DHCP is the protocol by which IP numbers may be dynamically assigned to various computers. Under this protocol, when a computer is turned on or rebooted, it does not have an IP number assigned to it. However, it does know how to determine the location of a DHCP host, which will assign an IP number. By communication with this host, the computer obtains its IP number.
